History of the Peninsula of NICOYA
The word Nicoya comes from the Nahuatl Nekok Yaotl which means water on both sides
The Nicoya Peninsula is the most largest in the country. It has an area of 5,130km², making it one of the
largest in Central America.
The hermitage of San Blas dates back to 1544 and is the oldest building in colonial Nicoya. Nicoya and the
entire territory of Guanacaste was annexed to Costa Rica on July 25, 1824, with its head city Nicoya. Thus,
Costa Rica gains a rich territory abundant with traditions and natural beauty.

Traditions from NICOYA
Nicoya has many living traditions that are the heritage of the Mesoamerican people,
such as ceramics, the marimba, their corn-based diet, and the preparation of coyol wine.
The festival of the atolada that is still celebrated on December 9 was originally the Fiesta al Sol,
which since 1544 became a festival in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe in which today pujagua atol is served, chicha and chicheme in guacal.
